Can cognitive science be a major?
Yes. Cognitive science is an established undergraduate major at universities including UC San Diego, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon and Edinburgh, and MIT offers the closely related Brain and Cognitive Sciences major. It combines psychology, computer science, neuroscience, linguistics and philosophy. It is a good major if you want to study the mind and are willing to build a hard skill alongside it, such as programming or statistics. Without that skill, it can be harder to explain to employers than computer science or a more familiar subject.
The major exists because the subject crosses departments. A question such as how children learn language needs psychology, linguistics and, increasingly, computer modeling. That breadth is the degree's main attraction and also its main risk, and this guide covers both. If your main question is about jobs, see what you can do with a cognitive science degree, which goes through specific roles. For what the field studies, see what is a cognitive scientist?
What do you study in a cognitive science major?
There is no standard curriculum. Núñez and colleagues (2019) treated this lack of a shared core as evidence that the field never fully unified, so check each program's course list rather than assuming the name means the same thing everywhere. Most programs, however, draw on the same ingredients:
- Cognitive psychology: memory, attention and perception, decision making.
- Computer science: programming, and often algorithms, machine learning or AI.
- Mathematics and statistics: statistics at minimum, and calculus or linear algebra in technical tracks.
- Neuroscience: brain structure and function, and methods such as fMRI and EEG.
- Linguistics: syntax, semantics and language processing.
- Philosophy of mind: consciousness, representation and what counts as an explanation.
- Research methods: experimental design and, ideally, a thesis or lab project.
Universities with a cognitive science major
These five programs show how differently the degree can be built. Requirements change, so confirm the details in each university's current catalog before you apply. Many other universities offer the major too; our degree guide names some of them.
| University | Degree | How it is organized |
|---|---|---|
| UC San Diego | BA or BS in Cognitive Science | Run by a dedicated department. The BS offers optional specializations, including Neuroscience, Clinical Aspects of Cognition, Language and Culture, Design and Interaction, and Machine Learning and Neural Computation. |
| MIT | Course 9, Brain and Cognitive Sciences | A tiered curriculum that starts with computer science, neural computation, and probability and statistics, then moves to specific topics. More biological and computational than most programs, with an emphasis on hands-on research. |
| Johns Hopkins | Cognitive Science major | Five areas: cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, linguistics, computational approaches, neuroscience and philosophy of mind. Students choose two as focal areas and also take two math courses. |
| Carnegie Mellon | BS in Cognitive Science | Administered by the Psychology Department, with statistics, programming, calculus, computational modeling, cognitive psychology and a student-designed concentration. |
| University of Edinburgh | BSc Cognitive Science (four years); also an MA (Hons) in Cognitive Science (Humanities) | The BSc is listed under the School of Informatics and combines informatics with courses in areas such as psychology, linguistics and philosophy. The MA is based in Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. |
Notice the differences. A student at MIT and a student on Edinburgh's humanities route could both describe their degree as cognitive science and have studied quite different things. The department that houses the program often tells you more than its name does.
BA vs BS in cognitive science
Where both exist, the BS is usually the more technical option. At UC San Diego, for example, the BS requires more demanding lower-division courses and an additional upper-division computation course, and the specializations sit under the BS.
- Choose a BS if you are considering machine learning, data science, software, computational research or a science-based graduate program.
- Choose a BA if you want more room for electives, a second major, or a focus on philosophy, language, design or education.
Do not read too much into the letters. A BA with strong programming and statistics electives can be better preparation than a BS without them, and employers will look at what you can do.
What can I do with a cognitive science major?
Graduates tend to go into user experience research and design, data analysis, software, product roles, education, research assistant posts and graduate school in fields such as psychology, neuroscience, computer science, medicine, law and speech-language pathology. Some of those routes need further qualifications. The BLS tracks occupations rather than majors, so there is no official outcome figure for this degree. The table shows national US figures for common destinations, and these cover everyone in the occupation, not cognitive science graduates alone.
| BLS occupation | Typical entry education | Median annual wage (May 2025) | Projected growth, 2025-35 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software developers | Bachelor's | $135,980 | 10% |
| Data scientists | Bachelor's | $120,230 | 35% |
| Web and digital interface designers | Varies, often bachelor's | $104,000 | 6% |
| Market research analysts | Bachelor's | $78,760 | 7% |
A cognitive science graduate competes for these jobs with computer science, statistics and design graduates, so median pay is not a promise. Early-career pay in particular will be lower than the median.
Is cognitive science a good major? Pros and cons
Advantages
- Interest. If questions about mind, language and AI are what keep you reading, that motivation is a real asset across four years.
- Unusual combination of skills. Few degrees teach you both to program and to design a study with human participants. That combination suits user research, AI evaluation and behavioral data science.
- Flexibility. The major keeps several graduate routes open while you find out what you like.
- Relevance to AI. Questions about how people reason and learn, and how they use AI systems, are of growing practical interest.
Disadvantages
- Breadth can become shallowness. A little of five subjects is less useful than a lot of one, and a program with no required depth leaves this to you.
- Less recognizable. Employers know what a computer science degree means. You will need to explain yours, and a portfolio helps.
- No direct profession. Unlike nursing or accounting, the degree leads to no specific job or license.
- Research careers need more study. Most research jobs expect a graduate degree, and permanent academic posts are competitive.
- Limited availability. Many universities offer it only as a minor or track, or not at all.
What is the scope of cognitive science?
Students ask about scope in two senses. As a subject, it covers perception, memory, language, reasoning, emotion, consciousness and intelligence in humans, animals and machines (Thagard). As a career, its scope is wider than its job market suggests: there is no large category of “cognitive science jobs”, but the skills apply in technology, health, education and research. Our careers guide looks at the current outlook.
Cognitive science vs psychology vs computer science
| If you want... | Consider |
|---|---|
| To become a clinical or counseling psychologist | Psychology. Check the accreditation your country requires. In the UK, for example, look for accredited psychology degrees. |
| To be a software engineer or machine learning engineer | Computer science, perhaps with a cognitive science minor. |
| To do computational research on the mind | Cognitive science BS, or computer science with psychology electives. |
| To work in user experience research | Cognitive science, psychology or human-computer interaction, plus a portfolio. |
| To work on the biology of the brain | Neuroscience or biology. See cognitive science vs neuroscience. |
| To explore the mind before specializing | Cognitive science, adding programming or statistics early. |
If you are torn between cognitive science and computer science, a useful test is which you would rather do on a difficult week: read about how people think, or write code. If you can double major or add a minor, cognitive science with computer science or statistics is a strong pairing.
Which 11th grade stream is best for cognitive science?
This question usually comes from students in India and similar school systems. No stream is formally required for the field as a whole, so what follows is our general advice, not a rule. Check the entry requirements of each program you are interested in.
- Science with mathematics keeps the most options open, including computer science, engineering and technical cognitive science programs. Adding biology or psychology, if your school allows it, is useful.
- Humanities or commerce with mathematics also works, especially if combined with psychology. Keeping mathematics matters because statistics and programming run through the subject.
- Humanities without mathematics still leaves a way in through psychology, philosophy or linguistics, but you will need to learn statistics and programming later.
In India the subject is more often taught after a first degree than as a bachelor's program. IIT Gandhinagar's MSc in Cognitive Science accepts a bachelor's degree in any discipline, subject to minimum marks. The Centre of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Allahabad runs an integrated MSc-PhD open to graduates in fields ranging from psychology and linguistics to engineering and the life sciences, with entry through the COGJET test. Some private universities list a BSc in cognitive science, so check the course content and recognition carefully before enrolling.
How to get the most from the major
- Learn programming and statistics in your first two years, even on a BA.
- Choose a concentration early and take it to an advanced level.
- Join a research lab, ideally by your second year. It is the best way of finding out if you want graduate school.
- Build evidence you can show: a thesis, a data project, a user research case study.
- Do an internship before your final year if you plan to work outside academia.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can cognitive science be a major?
Yes. Universities including UC San Diego, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon and Edinburgh offer an undergraduate cognitive science degree, and MIT offers a major in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Other universities offer it as a minor or as a track within psychology or computer science.
Is cognitive science a good major?
It is a good major if you are interested in the mind and pair it with a concrete skill such as programming, statistics or research methods. Its weakness is breadth: without depth in something, it is harder to explain to employers than computer science.
What can I do with a cognitive science major?
Common routes are user experience research, data analysis, software, product work, education and graduate study in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, medicine or speech-language pathology. Some of these need further qualifications.
Is cognitive science a BA or a BS?
It depends on the university. UC San Diego offers both, Carnegie Mellon awards a BS, and Edinburgh offers a BSc and an MA. Where both exist, the BS usually requires more mathematics and computing.
Is cognitive science harder than psychology?
It depends on the program, but cognitive science usually requires more programming and mathematics than a psychology major. Students who dislike those subjects often find it harder.
Which is better, cognitive science or computer science?
Neither is better in general. Computer science is the safer choice for software and machine learning engineering. Cognitive science suits people more interested in how people think, and combining the two is a strong option if your university allows it.
Which stream should I choose in 11th grade for cognitive science?
Science with mathematics keeps the most options open, and adding biology or psychology helps. Humanities or commerce with mathematics and psychology also works. Keeping mathematics is the most useful single decision, but check the requirements of the programs you are interested in.
